Nevada to liberalise online gambling
Written by Philippe Ramou on Thursday, January 12, 2012

During the past 4 months, the debate has raged within the Gaming Commission of Nevada. Should they liberalise online gambling in the state? Finally, the « yes » won hands up. So, before next summer comes, the first licenses could be distributed.

A precursor

The state of Nevada has always been a precursor in terms of gambling. With this decision, it remains this way. Indeed, if debates are increasing about the liberalisation of online gambling activities at a federal level, the state couldn’t wait for this hypothetical legislation to come. Thus, it can take a strong position before an eventual national bill is adopted. This step ahead could be an advantage compared to other states.

New revenue stream for the casinos on the Strip

For many years, casinos on the Strip were against all projects of liberalisation for online gambling. However, since the financial crisis hit Las Vegas, they changed their mind, hoping to find new revenue streams in the online field. Nevertheless, they still need to be patient, as the first licenses will not be delivered before next spring.
